Topic: Oral placement
Org-facing boundaries—personal archive, teacher/class relationship, not an exam, no class auto-change, no stored audio.
Audience: Organization admins / academic staff / teachers / evaluators · Applies to: SaaS / private
Goal: Clarify where oral placement sits in product capabilities, who sees what, and how to describe it externally.
What it is
Students can optionally take about 10 minutes of speaking diagnostic from Home and Me, and get:
- Suggested band, course tier, certificate-style reference tags (reference)
- Review analysis: relative weak dimensions, per-item tips, next practice hints
- Saved to the student profile; Me keeps history for comparison
This is a standalone product capability, alongside the five Speaking tabs (Self practice / To-do / Speaking tasks / Multi-party / Speaking exam)—not configured via L2 tasks or L3 preferences.

Does not change L1 policy / L2 tasks / L3 prefs / class language level
| Layer | Relationship to placement |
|---|---|
| L0 capability packs | Speaking instances usually include it; no separate “enable placement” toggle |
| L1 org policy | Practice types / scenarios / self-practice do not gate placement |
| L2 teacher tasks | Placement is not an assignment type |
| L3 student preferences | Placement is not a practice preference |
| Class language level | Set in class settings; placement never auto-changes class |
Who sees what
| Role | Visible | Cannot |
|---|---|---|
| Student | Full result, history, review analysis | Treat placement as a formal exam score |
| Teacher | Roster summary (band + reference tag) | Operate placement for students; replay audio |
| Org / academic | Aligned with profile / reporting (per product) | Use band as sole placement rule or official credential |

Teacher read-only: Student oral placement
What it is not (external messaging)
| Not | Why |
|---|---|
| Formal speaking exam | No pass line; not graduation or official certificate |
| Stage grades | Not included in teacher period scores |
| Dedicated pronunciation scoring tool | Overall band suggestion, not per-phoneme drill |
| Voice identity | Checks who speaks, not level |
| Replayable audio archive | Placement audio is not stored; teachers see band/score summary |
Relationship to daily practice
- Placement: direction, personal speaking archive, periodic review
- Practice: speaking within modes / scenarios / policy
- Recommended story: placement → practice → retake (Scenario: oral placement and practice loop)
For org promotion: encourage voluntary baseline at term start or transfer, and voluntary retake after practice—do not force frequent retakes or promise band as contractual outcome.
Reporting / compliance
- Copy should say reference / not an exam score, matching the App.
- Certificate-style tags are mapping references, not official exam passes.
- If marketing mentions “AI leveling”, state it is assistive reference; class placement still follows academic rules and teacher judgment.
