FAQ: Student practice

No homework / to-dos?
Confirm the teacher published the task and did not close it; you are in that class; refresh Speaking → To-do. If classmates see a task and you do not, ask the teacher to check class membership. See Tasks and progress.
What pages are under Speaking?
Self practice / To-do / Speaking tasks / Multi-party dialogue / Speaking exam. They do not map 1:1 to the teacher’s practice mode. See Speaking tabs overview.
What can I do in Space?
Bottom Space is mainly study suggestions and a task list—not a full textbook catalog. Tasks assigned from a textbook open a lesson page (read materials → Start speaking practice). When the teacher enables class space, members / pair practice / challenges may also appear by visibility. See Space: learn from textbook tasks, What’s in Space.
Can I still do an overdue task?
Usually you can still practice (product behavior may vary), but it is marked overdue. Finish soon, or ask the teacher whether to republish.
How do I start speaking practice?
Prefer Speaking → To-do and select a task. For extra practice, if your organization allows it, use Speaking → Self practice. See Start speaking practice.
What is the difference between Talk live, Tap to talk, and Review & send?
They decide how you speak. Talk live is a continuous AI conversation; Tap to talk starts and sends with taps; Review & send lets you check or edit the text first. Start with Tap to talk. Most practice requires Start session first. If Settings still says Hold to talk, it is the same as Tap to talk. See How to speak.
What is the difference between a practice mode and a scenario?
The practice mode decides “what kind of practice”; the scenario decides “what to talk about.” Pre-exam quick practice is organized by question type and does not need a scenario, so the scenario selector is disabled. See Self practice: modes and scenarios.
Why don’t multi-person / speaking exam start automatically?
Without link parameters those pages do not auto-select a task. Select one from the in-page task list. See Speaking tabs overview.
Why is free practice blocked?
The org has not enabled “allow self practice when there is no homework.” Finish teacher tasks first, or ask an admin to open it in practice policy. See Practice troubleshooting, Org policy and enablement.
I changed practice preferences—why did the homework stay the same?
With a teacher task, the task wins; preferences mainly affect free practice. See FAQ: Product capabilities, L2 / L3.
Suggested daily order?
Speaking to-dos → practice → History. See Student workflow.
Where are messages and notifications?
Inside Me; top-bar envelope/bell also opens them. Main nav has no separate Messages item. See Messages and notifications.
Practice stuck, mic silent, or cannot start?
Check the top “Temporarily unable to practice” card: follow one main reason + one next step (request extra time / ask teacher / contact admin / enroll voice identity). Full table: Practice troubleshooting. Mic needs browser permission and a working system input.
AI not responding / submit failed?
Retry on a stable network; avoid double-tapping. If it persists, ask a teacher to escalate: speaking service configured, and org status allows new practice.
Where are my practice history and corrections?
Student main nav History—common sections: Learning progress, Error book, Practice history. See Tasks and progress.
Where can I see stage grades?
After the teacher generates class stage grades, you get a notification; view class stage scores under Me (UI may vary). Scoring: Stage grades: rules and generation.
What if usage runs out?
In Me → Usage, request extra time from the teacher; wait for approval before starting new practice. See Usage and request more time.
What is voice identity? Do I need to enroll?
It confirms the speaker is you (not a pronunciation score). When the school turns on exam voice checks, you may need to enroll or re-record a short clip before the exam. Follow prompts in Me → Settings or the exam dialog. Trial orgs usually do not require it. See Voice identity enrollment.
What is oral placement? Is it required?
A short speaking diagnostic on Home or Me → Oral placement with a suggested band, certificate-style reference tags, and review analysis (weak dimensions, per-item tips). Not a formal speaking exam, not part of stage grades, and it does not auto-change class difficulty. Optional; you can retake later. See Oral placement.
How does oral placement relate to practice?
Placement shows direction; practice builds talk time. Alternate: baseline or practice for a while, then retake and compare. Full rhythm: Scenario: oral placement and practice loop.
How often should I retake placement?
After 1–2 weeks or several practice sessions is a reasonable guide; avoid retaking too often. History and each run’s analysis: Me → Oral placement; block guide: Reading placement results & review.
Does placement change my class difficulty?
No. Results go to your profile only; class language level is still set by teachers / academic staff.
Voice check keeps failing when I start an exam—what now?
Check the on-screen similarity % vs the required threshold; re-enroll in a quiet place with your natural voice, then retry. If it still fails, ask your teacher about the school threshold, or try another device/browser. See Voice identity enrollment.
Phone and computer both OK? How do I open it?
Yes. Supported:
- Browser Web App (recommended: Chrome / Edge / Safari)
- PWA add to home screen (optional)
- Android / iOS app (org plan; otherwise browser or PWA is enough)
Practice needs mic permission. See Devices and access.
How do I install the PWA?
- iPhone: Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen
- Android: Chrome → Menu → Install app or Add to Home Screen
After install, open from the home-screen icon; login and practice match the browser flow.
